Miniature or Pony Half Cheek Mullen
A nicely proportioned bit for the tinier mouth.
All stainless steel.
Linda Schutte from Arena, WI. has purchased several of these nice little bits and finds that her minis work well with them. Pictured here is her mini Chunky in his Iowa Valley Carriage leather mini harness collecting her ribbon at the 2009 Villa Louis Carriage Classic in a cart that Linda's husband Wayne rebuilt with parts from Iowa Valley Carriage including the chrome rein rail and other chrome fittings.
Adena Ray from Arlington, WA. trains a lot of driving horses and has this to say about the Iowa Valley Carriage half cheek mullen mouth bit:
Why I like this bit:
The bar diameter is large enough for it to be gentle, but not so wide as to take up a lot of space in the pony's mouth. The slight arch to it allows it to rest comfortably. The half cheek provides gentle bending/turning instruction on the outside of the turn. I very rarely use any sort of a broken snaffle, particularly when ground driving. I believe it is too easy to poke them, especially if they misbehave. (If I have no choice but to use a broken snaffle because of fit, I always wrap in vet wrap or latex to minimize the nutcracker effect).

You are right about what we don't understand concerning bits! We can all learn so much. My husband films many of my training sessions. I study the photos/video and the horse/pony tells me when they like or don't like a bit. I watch carefully to see how they react to it, when/how they flex, what their expression is like. Horses don't lie!!!! Of course, it isn't always easy to hear what they have to say.
Yep, I'm crazy about the ponies!
