First Reaction to New Bit

I have tried my 11 hand Welsh pony gelding with the 4 inch French Link you supplied last week. We have done a dressage session, two 7 km trail drives at CDE pace, and we ran cones today. I am delighted to report that the pony seems to like the bit, and is much softer in the jaw and neck.

I rode out for a racing yard in UK for 13 years, and was an amateur steeplechase jockey. I learned from a very old and wise ex trainer that a French Link was a good bit to use with a horse that was inclined to grab the bit. With a single snaffle, once the barrel sections were locked between the teeth, you had nothing but a rock solid jaw and no communication. The French Link will still collapse in the mouth, even when the horse tries to grab it, so you have something to move and keep the jaw muscles loose. I have already found that Spunky will bore down onto the bit, but I can play with his jaw, and within 100 yards or so, the pressure vanishes and he lengthens his top line again. The more times I have driven him in this bit, the quicker the relaxation comes. Today, we went out for a trail drive with a novice client and his American Shetland mare that has only about 85 days in harness. I was able to keep Spunks settled behind the smaller pony most of the time.
On October 31 we are heading to an HDT, Prelim Single Pony, and I am excited about our chances. His top line in dressage is so much longer.
